Starbucks è una catena di caffetterie statunitensi. L’azienda ha sede a Seattle (USA) è stata fondata nel 1971 da Zoev Siegel, Jerry Baldwin e Gordon Bowker. Nasce inizialmente come torrefazione, ma presto si trasforma in caffetteria e successivamente in un franchising presente in tutto il mondo.
Il vero salto di qualità si ha però con l’avvento dell’ex manager Howard Schultz: egli acquista la proprietà dell’azienda nel 1987 e da lì a poco inizia un progetto di espansione che porta Starbucks prima al di fuori dei confini di Seattle e poi in giro per tutto il globo.
Il branding di Starbucks è incentrato attorno al tema marinesco: il nome proviene infatti dal romanzo Moby Dick, in cui Starbuck è il nome del primo ufficiale. Il logo raffigura invece una sirena con due code (oggi stilizzata), che doveva essere “seducente come il caffè”.
Oggi Starbucks conta quasi 32.000 negozi sparsi in giro per il mondo, di cui poco meno di 15.000 negli Stati Uniti e 4.200 in Cina. Per rendere l’idea delle dimensioni e della capillarità, McDonald’s, la seconda catena più diffusa al mondo, ha 38.000 punti vendita (la prima è Subway, con 42.000 location).
Considerando solo gli USA, nel suo settore Starbucks ha una quota di mercato particolarmente rilevante in termini di location, con un numero di negozi pari a 15.000, contro 9.600 di Dunkin’ e 4.800 di JAB.
Starbucks nel 2020 ha generato un fatturato di 23,5 miliardi di dollari, in calo del -11% rispetto al 2019, in cui aveva registrato il massimo storico di 26,5 miliardi. Anche l’utile appare in netto calo (-74%), passando (causa COVID) da 3.6 miliardi a 928 milioni di dollari.
